Hi everyone. The students in Sacred Hearts Academy in Kaimuki Honolulu did a unique cultural activity in October. High school students in a Japanese level 3 and 4 class put together a Japanese cultural lesson/activity for 2nd grade students. High school students pick the chopsticks as a theme of the lesson and choose the activity of “Nagashi Somen” to teach how to use the chopsticks and Japanese culture. As we research, learn, and prepare for Nagashi Somen, we faced a problem finding the drinkable and safe water for somen noodles around the school. The class came up with the idea of using origami crafts instead of noodles so that the water quality became not an issue. They created many origami crafts to float on the bamboo river and have lower school girls pick the crafts up with the chopsticks. We named this activity “Origami Slip and Slide” to make it as a fun game for 2nd graders. At the end, we provided somen noodles for everyone to eat together. It was a great opportunity for the Japanese class students to get to know the lower school girls and to teach, learn and experience Japanese culture and manners around the chopsticks, Origami culture, and Nagashi Somen. It was very relaxing and fun activity using the Bamboo River and water; moreover, during this event, students were able to aware the relationship between the nature and people’s daily life in Japan. It was a wonderful summer day in Japanese class at Sacred Hearts Academy.
