Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu (Happy New Year)! We are Island Pacific Academy (IPA), a private school, in Kapolei.
In the beginning of a new year, I had a Japanese new year lesson. I explained about new year greetings, fukubukuro (luck/mystery bag), osechi (specialized foods for new year), otoshidama (money envelope), omairi (visiting to shrine/temple), and omikuji (fortune-telling paper strips). At the end of the class, students wrote ema (writing wishes on wooden plaque)! Students wrote their various wishes such as getting good grades, going to college, travelling to Japan, etc. After ema, students picked omikuji. Omikuji has 12 levels of blessings (great blessing to great curse) and many students got good ones! I hope this year will be meaningful and grateful for all of students!
